1. Introduction
1.1 Introduction
The purpose of this document is to guide users to use Medio L40 device with USB communication for Windows 10 and above.
Issue Identified: The current USB Connection is no longer supported for Windows 10 and above. Tagsys Medio L40 device with VID_0403 and PID_F0EF is no longer supported. USB communication is not enabled due to this PID.
Solution: To resolve this issue, the device needs to be updated with the latest FTDI VID_0403 and PID_6010. We have provided the steps to address this problem in Section 2 - USB Driver Installation, tab Troubleshooting in case of warning.
2. USB Driver Installation
2.1 Preinstallation using FTDI executable driver
For this FTDI software, it’s not sure that this step is necessary, in the majority of cases the use of this executable is not necessary, and only the installation of the driver is necessary. The download of this executable can be done later if necessary as detailed below.
Download the driver from the FTDI website as shown in the image below (Figure 2.1)
Download the CDM 2.12.36.4-WHQL-Certified.Zip, unzip and click Extract’ as shown in Figure 2.2
Download FT_PROG from the FTDI Utilities web page and install it on your laptop.
This software could be useful in case it is necessary to rename the USB Chip.
Launch the FT_Prog, you will see the screen shown below.
2.2 Manual Installation
Right click on the Windows logo at the bottom left-hand corner of the screen and select Device Manager.
In the Device Manager window there should be a device Tagsys Medio L40 under Other Devices (Figure 2.5) with a yellow warning symbol to indicate a problem i.e. no driver installed. Right click on the other device (Tagsys Medio L40 in this example) and select update driver to bring up a menu as shown in Figure 2.6.
This then displays the option for an automatic search or a manual search. Select the second option to browse computer for driver software as shown in Figure 2.7. This will display two options:
"Search automatically for drivers in this location" and
"Let me pick from a list of available drivers on my computer", as shown in Figure 2.8.
Select the second option to pick the drivers manually.
Select your hardware type as "Universal Serial Bus controllers" and click Next, as shown in Figure 2.9. Then, select "Have Disk..." and click Browse to locate and select the latest driver.
You should have “Generic USB” like bellow.
If the display is difrent like “manufacturer (Fabricant) Windows”:
Then change to “USB Connector Managers”, in order to acces at “Generic USB”

Click Browse and navigate to the CDM2.12.36.4 folder downloaded from the FTDI website. Select the ftdiport.inf file, click Open, and then press the OK button.
By default, FT4222 Interface A will be selected. There is no need to change it—simply click Next. You may receive an update warning—click Yes to continue.
You will see a Successful message. The output screen is shown below. Click Close
Remove the USB cable from the PC and reconnect it. Go to Device Manager and check if the USB is detected under Ports (COM & LPT) without showing any warnings.
2.3 Troubleshooting in case of warning
Check in your device manager if window has not assigned the same communication port twice.
If so, it must be changed manually.
NB : This driver installation should be done for each USB port you would like use !
If you are still facing issues with driver installation and see the USB Serial Port with a warning symbol (Figure 2.16), follow the steps below :
Enable the internet and wait for 5 minutes. After that, check if the issue persists. If the warning still appears in Device manager, open FT_Prog and press the Search button.
You may see the details below. Click USB Device Descriptor to view the Product ID and Vendor ID. If you see the Product ID as F0EF, please change it to 6010, as F0EF is no longer supported. After making the change, click Program to apply the update it.
Finally, wait until the programming is successfully completed. You should see a "Programming Successful" message.
Then, remove the USB device from the PC and reconnect it. Next, go to Device Manager, and you should see the USB Serial Port listed WITHOUT any warning symbols.
If you are still facing the problem, you will need to reinstall the driver : right-click the USB Serial Port and select Update driver.
This then displays the option for an automatic search or a manual search. Select the second option to browse manually as shown in Figure 2.24 . Click Browse and navigate to the CDM2.12.36.4 folder downloaded from the FTDI website. Select the file, click Open, and then press the OK button. You may receive a success message if the driver is installed successfully. Unplug and plug the USB cable back in, then go to Device Manager to check the port status.
If everything is working correctly, you should see USB Serial COM without any warning symbols.
Then, open Tagsys Explorer and perform Device Discovery. You should see the list of devices displayed below.
3. RS2342 Interface
3.1. Pre-requisites and configuration
To get connected to the reader through RS232 protocol, you will need to use a USB to RS232/485/TTL converter.
The RS-232 interface does not require any specific driver installation. The default RS-232 speed is 115200 baud, but it can be modified through software. Supported baud rates include 4800, 9600, 19200, 38400, 57600, and 115200 baud.
The Medio L40 reader is delivered with the Tagsys Explorer software tool intended to easily setup the reader, test it and perform RFID reading and writing operations. In addition, Tagsys Explorer can be used to display additional information about the reader (Firmware and hardware versions and revisions) as well as to upgrade reader firmware.
3.2 Tagsys Explorer configuration
This section describes how to start with Tagsys Explorer.
The “Tagsys Explorer Wizard” opens automatically when Tagsys Explorer is started for the first time. This wizard allows you to quickly set up the Tagsys Explorer to perform basic tasks such as configuring your RFID device and read or write tags.
The Tagsys Explorer Wizard can automatically discover and display RFID devices plugged into your computer’s serial or USB ports or connected on a TCP/IP network.
Discovered devices are displayed under the “Discovered Devices” group. The same device can be displayed one or more times depending on the number of communication interfaces (Serial/USB, Ethernet) this device is connected to. The preferred connection is the “Ethernet” interface when available as it is the fastest communication interface. You can restart a discovery at any time by clicking “Discover Devices”.
If you want to set up your device parameters, such as changing its description or its interfaces settings, check “I want to configure device’s system, interfaces or services”. If you want to read tags, write their memory or send specific tag commands, check “I want to read or write tags on:” You can then choose the radio that should be used for emitting and receiving. Medio L40 only supports one radio (Radio #0). In the “Radio Parameters” section, choose the settings you would like to use :
Verify the summary of all selected parameters chosen and click “Finish” to confirm
Tagsys Explorer will then automatically open the panels you need and apply the radio configuration you have chosen. The following screen appears:
4. TCP/IP Interface
4.1 Configuration
10/100 Ethernet interface does not require specific drivers installation. Default TCP/IP configuration is the following :

The green Ethernet Activity LED acts as well as the Ethernet Link LED. Green LED constantly ON signals that the reader is connected to an Ethernet network. Green LED starts blinking to signal activity on the Ethernet with the L40 reader. Orange LED is only used to provide feedback on the reader being powered up or not.
Discovered devices are displayed under the “Discovered Devices” group.
